Newsletter #52: Summer Editions, a $18M+ ARR newsletter, and the Euro tournament

Hi there,

I hope you're feeling good.

These past 10 days in Canada were an amazing experience.

After the Shopify Summit week, I added 5 days of vacation to discover the city.

With some colleagues, we went to the Niagara Falls, and WOW! What a slap in the face. The falls are not just beautiful, they are mind-blowing. It's impressive to witness such a force of nature.

I will remember it for a long time (yes, we went on the boat).

After that, we went back to Toronto. I spent a few days exploring the city with my friends Jan Frey, from the "Coding with Jan" YouTube channel, and Aravind Baskara, who works for the app development partner Swym.

From morning runs along the lake, to lobster burgers, yummy smoothies, and fireworks to celebrate Canada Day, we had a blast.

In today's edition, we discussing Shopify Summer Editions, a $18M+ ARR newsletter, and the Euro tournament.

Let's dive in.

Work

During the bi-annual event called Editions, Shopify officially presents recent platform updates and unveils new features that were still unknown to the public.

6 months after Winter Editions, it's now time for Summer Editions.

Summer Editions took place on July 24th, 2024.

The key word for these Editions is unification. Shopify is doubling down on unifying key workflows and infrastructure all across the platform to make it faster, more resilient and more tightly integrated.

Among the 150+ updates, here are 3 that I believe are making a huge difference:

  1. Improvements to Shopify Markets

You can now have a highly customized experience for each market: different catalog, store’s theme, currency, language, content, domain, and business entity.

It means that you could create the following experiences inside a single Shopify store:

  • Your D2C buyers in Japan see a specific list of products and associated prices, all in Japanese yen.

  • Your B2B buyers in the UK see a version of your store’s theme customized with a special banner, just for them.

  • Your flagship retail store in New York has a specific product catalog containing only your bestsellers.

Shopify developers no longer have to create several stores and build custom apps to synchronize them all.

How powerful is that?

  1. Combined listings

Merchants can now showcase unique pictures, descriptions, and URLs for multiple options of a product under one parent listing.

Shopify developers won’t have to use metafields workarounds anymore. This feature comes out of the box for Plus merchants.

  1. Split shipping in checkout

Customers now have more clarity and choice regarding shipping at checkout.

As we know that shipping conditions are one of the major causes of cart abandonment, this is a major improvement.

Merchants are now able to show customers if their order will arrive in multiple shipments. And, most importantly, customers have the ability to select a different delivery speed and price per shipment.

In edition 10, I wrote about one of my favorite podcasts, "My First Million".

“My First Million” was created by Sam Parr and Shaan Puri, two entrepreneurs who sold their respective companies for millions of dollars a few years ago.

In a recent episode, Sam and Shaan interviewed Kevin Van Trump, the creator of one of the most lucrative newsletters on the planet.

Kevin’s newsletter, called “The Van Trump report”, has some very impressive numbers:

  • Daily newsletter

  • 30,000+ subscribers

  • Each subscriber pays $60 per month, or $600 per year

  • $18M+ in annual recurring revenue (ARR)

  • 4 people running the newsletter

How impressive is that?

In The Van Trump report, Kevin writes about farming and agriculture, which he is very passionate about.

It’s super inspiring for me to see someone being paid to do what he loves, because he consistently brings so much value to his readers.

My favorite activity at the moment is watching the UEFA European Football Championship, a.k.a the Euro.

I don’t follow football much but, when I do, I seriously do. I enjoy watching every World Cup and every Euro tournament.

Now that I live in the UK, I get to watch the games of England in sports bars. It’s such a fun (and intense) experience!

Tomorrow, at 8pm UK time, I’ll be watching the game opposing France to Portugal. I support France, I really hope we win the tournament!

I still remember our loss to Portugal in the final of Euro 2016… It would be quite symbolic to win against them tomorrow. Let’s GO!

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for reading this edition until the end.

I'll talk to you soon.

Take good care of yourself.
